Advice from Montagne
In this section, you will find useful information for making your outdoor activities more comfortable, from choosing a backpack for trekking to deciphering a map in mountainous areas.
1) PHYSICAL TRAINING:
It is not advisable to switch suddenly from a sedentary lifestyle to walking miles carrying a heavy backpack. It is necessary to be in shape before hand, to train gradually over certain distances to avoid injury. By learning your physical limitations, you will be less likely to overexert yourself during the trip.
2) ORIENTATION:
Maps will help you familiarize yourself with your destination. Should you get lost, it is helpful to have a prismatic compass, which is more exact than a transporter compass. However, both compass styles are useful for navigation.
3) CLOTHING:
The garments and shoes you need will depend on the climate and terrain of your destination.
For colder climates, thermal underwear, technical jackets, and waterproof pants with breathable weaves will help control your body temperature. For warmer climates, choose lightweight clothing with breathable weaves.

4) TENTS:
When planning to buy a tent, you should familiarize yourself with the different tent models, how and with what they are constructed, and their purpose. The weight of the tent is very important, but you should also consider its resistance, size, and design.
For high altitudes: The geodesic igloo resists blizzards and easy to transport. It is waterproof, and has a breathable weave with sealed seams. Built for a maximum of 4 people.
For half-way up the mountain: The igloo can be taller with a capacity for more than 4 people.
For camping use: Pitched roof tents or igloo tents. They are more spacious and comfortable for family use, and may be taller since they are not exposed to extreme weather.
5) BACKPACKS:
When you buy a backpack, you should consider your height and the objects you plan to carry in order to distribute the weight properly.
It is advisable to have a back regulation system to allow you to adjust the pack and to distribute the weight throughout the body. Your pack may have different, useful features, depending on the model, such as a pickax-holder, raincover, multiple pockets, etc.

6) SLEEPING BAGS:
Depending on the climate you are going to visit, you should choose the sleeping bag by its thermal range. For colder areas, the ideal is a sleeping bag of 0º to -20º C (32º to -68º F). For warmer to hot areas, the thermal range should be aproximately +10º to +20º C (50º to 68º F). In any of the two cases, it is always better to carry an insulating aluminium mat to put below the sleeping bag, to isolate it from the ground (specially during the night, when it gets colder).
