Advice from Montagne
In this article, we include useful information for choosing the right sleeping bag for you. With the right bag, the last thing you will think about is going to a hotel in the middle of your next escape.
¿Which model do I need?
First, pay attention to what conditions you will experience when you will use your bag. We suggest that you considering the climate and the type of terrain so you can choose the sleeping bag with the right weight, size, and ease in set-up.
Each person has a distinct metabolism, so insulation must also be different for each user. If you are used to sleeping with a lot of covers, the best would be to look for a bag that provides more warmth than normal for the climate that you will be experiencing.
Two values, expressed in centigrade in the description of each sleeping bag, expresses the approximate thermal range. The first number indicates the minimal temperature at which that the bag can maintains its interior comfort. The second indicates the lowest temperature at which this model can be used.
TYPES OF BAGS
Sarcophagus style: These are standard for backpackers because the narrow width at the bottom of the bag combines efficient retention of heat in this area. Models, like the Zaigón, are 84cm wide at the height of the shoulders and 56 cm at the bottom, thereby preventing the loss of heat occurring in looser bags. However, given the more narrow size at the feet, movement in that area is restricted. Claustrophobics should think twice about getting this bag.
Rectangular style: These more space to move inside, but are heavier and bulkier. Although they are less efficient in maintaining temperature, they are less expensive, and one always has the option to unzip them to use the open bag as a blanket.
There are intermediate styles, or modified sarcophogus bags, which have both positive and negative points.
MATERIAL
Goose down filler offers excellent insulation and durability, and is lightweight. The Softdown bag, for example, weighs only 0,85 kg and has a approximate thermal range of between 0 y -10ºC.
For humid climates or swampy ground, it is best to choose synthetic fillers, such as used in the Standard bag, which maintain body heat despite humidity.
The type of material used for the interior and exterior of the bag is important to note when looking to maximize breathability of the bag, so that the body’s perspiration does not remain trapped and condenses in the interior, and its impermeability.
The bag should always correspond to the climate. If the temperature dips a below what you expected , you could always sleep with more warmth. However, a bag made for low temperatures could be terribly uncomfortable for hot nights.
Bringing an camping mattress or Eva mat will make sleeping more comfortable and will prevent the bag’s cooling on contact with the ground.
There is a wide range of models and material available to make your search for the perfect bag easier.
