Advice from Montagne
A day of trekking is the best way to get connected to with nature and to energize yourself. To prepare for the challenge, there are a couple of things to keep in mind while you pack.
Even on short trips, there are ítems to always have on hand: Food, water, impermeable and warm clothing, a hat, sunglases, and maybe a camera and cellphone. The most adventurous bring along their GPS and penknife.
Before packing other things, we recommend evaluating their necessity. With less weight, physical performance is better. Some ultralight, high-resistance packs, like our Feather Weight Technology line, are especially made for these activities.
The back (1) is the principal element of the whole pack. It is important that it adapts correctly to the body, with compression straps at the waist (2) and at the chest (3) to maintain stability, and padding (4) for better support on the shoulders. Balancing the location of the heaviest objects will avoid bad or uncomfortable postures.
If it begins to rain in the middle of your trek, it is a good idea to have a backpack cover to waterproof and protect your gear. The results are even better if this cover, included in packs made especially for trekking and mountain climbing, has thermosealed seams that prevent water from entering.
To make looking for things in your pack easier, don’t forget to organize your gear in your pack according to how frequently and when you will use it. The pocket on the top (5) is the best place to put more fragile objects. Some models have also side mesh compartments (6), gear straps (7), elastic cord in front (8) to give you even more places to accommodate maps, cameras, water bottles or GPS receivers.
